Digital printing opens up a perspective with which all today’s label and packaging printers have to deal. In the first edition of our special "Digital Printing today" the following articles inform you about the latest trends in digital printing: “Video killed the radio star”, “We can assume that digital printing will transform the way the industry works”, "Digital printing: An overview – Part 1" and "Making production inkjet mainstream".
“Video killed the radio star”
Is digital printing of corrugated board in large volumes the end of flexo printing? Will the entire industry have to change direction?
The theme of the 1979 one-hit-wonder “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the pop-duo The Buggles could easily be applied to the current mood in the corrugated board industry. Manufacturers and suppliers of corrugated board are increasingly asking the question of whether digital printing will do away with the need for flexo printing.
Like other similar procedures, the current business model in the flexo printing industry has not fundamentally changed for decades. However, a wide range of technical developments are opening
up totally new procedures. Examples of this are the use of more colours and finer screens, ever more complex graphics and time-consuming refining processes. All of this has changed the technical
performance of the process impressively along with its range of uses.
“We can assume that digital printing will transform the way the industry works”
The editor of Flexo+Tief-Druck interviews Jakob Bovin, the product marketing director for digital printing of corrugated board at Bobst
Bobst and Kodak jointly developed a Continuous Inkjet digital printing machine for producing packaging made from corrugated board. What are its unique features?
Jakob Bovin: Food-safe inks in combination with a standard format for the corrugated board industry are the two important aspects. There are very few machines on the market that meet its productivity, print quality and colour spectrum, or meet the needs of the corrugated board industry, especially the ability to be perfectly integrated into their processes.
